$180 a night IS not expensive for Mexico, and I mean it's a Sheraton. What is it that you are looking for because anything extremely cheap when traveling Internationally you should be quite Leary of! Good Luck, seems you are going to need it!

Casa Gonzales is a delightful little 22 room hotel one block from the U.S. embassy. I thnk it costs about $60.00 a nite...know several people who have used it and loved it. See web site below. Rooms are small. but it is family run and the people are delightful and speak English. You can also have your meals there.

the visitors visa is very easy. if you take the plane, it's just included in your ticket price. they hand out the forms and you fill them out just before decent. if you go via car or bus, you have to stop at the little hut at the border, you go in with your passport (or license and birth certificate,) pay 17 USD and they fill it out for you and that's it. it's very easy.sounds like the small hotel is a good idea. but i also wanted to say that in mexico city, you need to be very careful. don't ever take a taxi off the street....call for one. if you are staying at a large hotel, it's ok to have the front desk call. or if you trust the hotel owners that's ok too. if not...call for the taxi yourself. in mexico city..you are paying for a sense of safety as well as the room.
