I went to Rio about two years ago with my wife. A couple of things to consider:1) A good hotel will run you about $150/night. Don't stay anywhere cheap because Rio isn't very safe. You want to be in the "tourist" areas in Ipanema or Copacabana. They are pricier but keep in mind that anywhere else and your odds of getting mugged skyrocket.2) All of the tourist stuff over there costs about $30/pop. There is a whole bunch of stuff to see, so keep that in mind when you budget yourself. We ended up going to 5-6 different spots and it cost us around $300 for two people.3) about 25% of the people we ran into speak english. This is another really important reason to stay at a good hotel. Anytime you want to go anywhere the english speaking staff will give you eact directions and explain to the cabbies where to take you. They'll also tell you how to get back and how to stay safe.4) The things I enjoyed about Rio the most were the beaches (holy hell, they are incredible), the juice bars (try every kind of juice you can - they are amazing) and the small tourist villages that are sprinkled all over Rio. Expect to spend a lot of time walking around and soaking in the sights and the culture. It's an amazing, beautiful, and fascinating place.
