Default Where can I stay for cheap in Honolulu?

Hi Hawaii natives! Where would you stay if you wanted to visit Honolulu from the mainland but didn't have much money? I would love to stay in Waikiki but the hotels there are expensive. Would it be a good idea to rent a car and stay somewhere a bit out the way but cheap? Any idea of the prices? Thanks!

Try Nanakuli. It's really not that far away and the prices are better. Look at personal rentals not realtors or time share. I had a beautiful 3 bedroom townhouse for $375 a month. I'd love to go back there myself!

There's a hostel nearby Kapiolani Park. Check in Lonely Planet Honolulu for the name (which escapes me right now).The YMCA has beds as well.

Kuhio Park Terrace in Honolulu is pretty cheap. Dunno of anywhere else thats "cheap".
