berlin.a good place for holidays?how is the weather in july there? Grand Hotel Esplanade is a good hotel - brand-new and 5 star. But it is in a shitty area. It is part of the construction works done after reunification around Postdamer Platz. This also means it is close to the Western part of Berlin that used to be a next to the wall. This is bad since this was the least desirable place to live for many years. Due to its new location it is slowly getting cleaner. Yet you can still see signs of a "not-so-nice area" - strip clubs, video rental and many immigrants with their shops catering to local needs. It is also quite a walk from the next Underground and S-Bahn stop. The closest is U Nollendorfplatz and I would think twice about walking back very late to the hotel when using that stop. S+U Potsdamer Platz is close enough to call it "central", but not much more. http://www.esplanade.deBerlin is an inexpensive city, it is possible to find a place to sleep for 10 EUR per night. Most restaurants charge around 10 EUR per meal. There are many places with good traditional German food, ask at the reception of the hotel. Most people go to Berlin to experience the funk, the hip and underground things that are happening right now. I think you would have a better experience of the city if you roughed it and stayed in a typical Berlin hotel.I persoanlly like the Heart of Gold hostel and hotel near Friedrichstrasse. You could rent their appartment. http://www.heartofgold-hostel.de/Or if you want it more upscale, check out the 4-star Art Hotel Luise. http://www.luise-berlin.com/However the ultimate place to stay is the "Ostel". It is very hip budget hotel with appartments decorated in the typical style of the GDR. It is near S Ostbahnhof. The adress is Wriezener Karree 5, 10243 Berlin. You can book by emailing them at contact@ostel.euAll of the above places have the advantage of being very close to either an S or U stop. This is important as you'll need the S and U system to get around. You cannot walk as Berlin is too spread out and if you hire a limo (which I think is your plan since you want to stay at a 5-star place) you'll miss out a lot of the atmosphere of the city. If however you are set on staying in a 5-star place check out the legend - the Adlon.http://www.lhw.com/property.aspx?propertyid=47&ext=Madln&gclid=CLqYn5 Ty2pACFQRIaAodIn1yWgThe Adlon has a much better location for sightseeing than the Grand Esplanade. |
