Default which european regional city is most affordable to spend christmas in?

i will be in europe in december with my family (3 of us in total). i noticed that the week leading up to christmas accomodation prices soar. we are trying to decide which city or cities to spend the week between 22-31st of december. so london, paris is definitely out . we were thinking in around France/Germany/Belgium/Luxembourg/Holland or around thereabouts.i am looking to spend around $100 US (cheaper would be even better) per night for us 3, and around 1-3 star motel/hotel (or even hostel as long as it's not too seedy). it can be a regional city.in terms of countries, Italy is also fine too.

If you make a decision to travel just a little bit further than originally planned, you'd be surprised how Budapest is wonderful and more than affordable at Xmas. You'll easily find hotels under 100$ in 3star hotels, not far from the city center. The atmosphere is festive, and they have a Golden Week treat (the week you're planning to go) when prices are actually lower than during the year.Check it out here:http://www.budapestinfo.hu/en/calendar_of_events/budapest_christmas_2007

You can find something at the price you mention in Athens, Greece. Its a beautiful city! You can find many information about accommodation in Athens on Breathtaking Athens facebook page.

What about Norway or Sweden? Since you will be in Europe in Winter you might as well have snow. Lapland maybe. You may get to see the Northern Lights. There are a couple of ice hotels built every winter. A night there would be a highlight maybe. Dog sledding, snowmobiling, reindeer, home of Father Christmas.
