I don't necessarily need to rent a car, but I was wondering if when I landed at the airport if I went to the rental car company and they had cars left if it would be cheaper than making the reservation a head of time.

My experience with this matter is that, if you don't have a car already booked, they can (and do) charge whatever they think they can get away with, since they have a captive market at that point. If you really think you will have use for one, book ahead (after checking a few companies for best rate). It doesn't cost you anything, and you can always cancel just before you go if you happen to change your mind.
