Default Is Kenya safe to travel through at the moment?

Hi, I am supposed to fly into Nairobi this afternoon, stay overnight and then go on safari the next day, first to Lake Nakuru for one day and then three in the Masai Mara. Due to all of the unrest from election results, I am very scared and think I may cancel my trip. Could someone who is there tell me what it is like at the moment and you they think it would be safe/unsafe to do this travel. I have never been to Kenya, so I also don't really know what to expect. I am really stressing out, but I have already paid for my safari so I am reluctant to cancel it, but at the same time, I want to be safe more than anything. xx

I would say that Kenya is relatively safe compared to certain other african nations. There might be petty theft ect, but there should not be anything worse... if you are worried, travel w/ a friend...

I’m a Kenyan resident. As per today’s situationI think it is not safe for a vacation in Kenya at this moment. We are expecting the election result (which is taking much longer time than we have expected)…there are some violence reported thought out the country. And security has tightenedin every part of Kenya. And the real picture of the situation can be determined only after the declaration of the New President of Kenya which can be done at any moment. Just keep track of the news. As per me , if you can postpone your journey a little whileIt would be more safer…Really Kenya is a beautiful place..and the tourist destinations you have chosen are the best . Masai mara is one of the best Safari park in the world. And Kenyans are very friendly and kind…Of course like any other place in the world there are thugs and robbery.Pay some attention to your belonging when you are traveling .Have a Very Happy new year...and enjoy your stay in Kenya.

As a Kenyan, I would say postpone your trip. If you can keep all the same bookings you have, but go in about a month, I would say do that. The election results are not in, and until those are in and the place has been quiet for about a month, I would say hang on a bit. To keep abreast of what is really going on, log on to http://www.eastandard.nethttp://www.nationmedia.comhttp://news.bbc.co.ukI find these three to be the most reliable sources for up to date news on Kenya.

Dec 27 2007This advice has been reviewed and reissued. It contains new information in the Summary (update) and under Safety and Security: Civil Unrest/Political Tension (update). The overall level of the advice has increased. Summary We strongly advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Kenya at this time due to the unpredictable security situation, the high risk of terrorist attack and high crime levels. Pay close attention to your personal security at all times and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks. Dispute over the outcome of the Presidential elections held on 27 December 2007, has led to outbreaks of violence in Kenya. Despite calls for calm, the already tense situation in Kenya has the potential to escalate into further violence. A large demonstration is planned in Central Nairobi on 31 December 2007. See the Safety and Security: Civil Unrest/Political Tension section for more information. We continue to receive reports that terrorists are planning attacks against a range of targets, such as places frequented by foreigners including Australians. Foreign embassies, hotels and commercial airlines in Kenya have been targeted by terrorists in the past and remain potential targets. Security at the Australian High Commission in Nairobi has been increased. Kenyan authorities recently arrested terrorism suspects in the Nairobi suburb of Eastleigh. Australian High Commission staff have been advised to avoid this locality. In planning your activities, consider the kinds of places known to be terrorist targets and the level of security provided. Possible targets include commercial and public areas frequented by foreigners such as embassies, airports and commercial airlines, symbols and buildings associated with foreign interests, clubs, restaurants, bars, hotels, schools, markets, places of worship, shopping areas, outdoor recreation events, tourist areas and expatriate housing areas. Terrorist acts may include suicide operations, bombings and attacks on civil aviation or maritime vessels in or near Kenyan ports. We advise you to stay indoors in a secure location and avoid any unnecessary local travel until the situation becomes clearer. You should closely monitor the media and other local information sources for information about possible new safety or security risks. You should avoid all demonstrations, political rallies and large public gatherings because of their potential to turn violent. Violent clashes between police and armed gangs have occurred since the beginning of 2007 in parts of the Central province, north and north-east Kenya, the Mount Elgon area in western Kenya and in Nairobi. While foreigners are not targeted, you should monitor the media, exercise a high degree of caution and seek local advice before travelling to or through these areas. Violent crime against Westerners, including armed carjacking and home invasions, occurs frequently in and around Nairobi. You should avoid walking alone at night. We also strongly advise against travelling outside of Nairobi after dark. We strongly advise you not to travel to the border regions with Ethiopia, Sudan and Somalia because of the extremely dangerous security situation. Cross border violence occurs, including kidnapping, armed banditry, and violent tribal and clan disputes. Kenya's border with Somalia was closed on 3 January 2007 due to increased instability in Somalia.

I would postpone if you can. Kenya is usually great and peaceful but I have talked to my friends in Kenya and they have told me that people are fleeing even the small towns because of the violence. If you are mzungu you would probably be alright but I would advise against risking it, especially if you are African-American (you may be mistaken for Kikuyu)
