Default Travelling to Kenya... still safe? News looks bad!?

I was supposed to leave for Kenya in 2 weeks. I would be in and around Nairobi. Anyone know how bad it is inside of Nairobi right now? I have heard most of the chaos is in the surrounding areas. Has anyone travelled there latey? Thanks for the help!

I have not been to Kenya recently, but I travelled and lived there a few years ago. Kenya, especially Nairobi, is certainly not a safe place to visit. If you are going with a large group to volunteer or something you should be just fine, but don't go anywhere at night unless you are taking a taxi directly from door to door. Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are all very tourist friendly but don't get fooled by any of the travel sites saying they are safe places to visit. Crime is an issue, as well as fraud. People will try to gain your trust by 'helping' you find good shopping deals or walking you from place to place, but these 'helpers' are more likely to lead you into a precarious situation or rob you than help you with anything. I had a great time living in these countries but I learned the hard way that you have to be very cautious with where and when you travel, and never go alone. If you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer them. Feel free to email me.

Default Travelling to Kenya... still safe? News looks bad!?

I've just returned from Nairobi where I've been from the 29th of Dec to the 7th of Jan and where I'll return to end of this month. The better parts like Karen were safe, but it really wasn't possible to move around freely especially at night you can't go out. It was not easy to have information on the actual situation even down there. We had to change our travel plans as large demonstration kept being announced to be canceled last minute. All cars were checked by the police on the streets, but in the hotels it was calm and the airport rather well organized. Also taxis were reliable (always negotiate the prize before - about 30% less from what they asks is okay). All the best

The situation differs by the day. From what I hear, many parts of the country are safe, but some roads were/are blocked by angry citizens or police, and in general there are some limitations to social life. And better not get caught up in any demonstration as it may turn violent. It's mainly the big cities (Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu) and the Rift Valley where the unrest is.You could travel there if you know what you're doing, and a friend of mine does it as this moment. She's a film maker following the elections and is really in the middle of the political turmoil. But I would advise the average tourist to postpone his trip for now.good luck,Arjenhttp://www.kenya-advisor.com

if I tell you its bad, bad-Id be lying.Just be street smart. The situation is not that bad as the media puts it.Just make sure if you want to ask for direction ask from a person you can trust...eg. a police in uniform or a hotel.Otherwise its quite safe....I know because I live here.

If you are booked in a city (nairobi) hotel, i would probably advise you not to travel at this time, coz the situation is really uncertain. There is calm but we can actually feel the tension in the air. there r unauthorised rallies all over the country scheduled to take place on wed16th, thur17thand friday18th. nobody can predict what will happen.ps. i live in nairobi
