Default Why do people from SA discriminate against English language?

I was born in Italy,I'm a chef. I travel all around the world to train chefs in Italian restaunts. I know i have a poor command in English, and i'm not ashamed of that. When i posted my questionn one member said he thought I'was black because of my poor English. Does everybody in this country speak english as a 1st language. I'm fluent in my mother tounge. Like i said i travel all over the world but no one has ever said that to me, only here in South Africa. South Africa has different cultures. My mom is married to a SA citizen in Pretoria i visit them 3 times a month.

Haha, a South African insulting someones English? Even first language speakers of South African English should be ashamed of their usage, they really have no room to comment on anyone elses, especially when it's not ever your first language. You appear to speak it pretty well.

That person is just plain racist......there are many blacks who speak and write better English than many Afrikaans speaking people.....the question is why didn't he regard you an Afrikaner........goes to show that some people are heavily dipped in racial prejudice......

No, the normal South Africans do not discriminate against people who do their best to speak English. We respect them. The SA people who speak English as a first language are in the minority. BUT, English is also not spoken by all South Africans. A lot of them master English as a third, fourth or fifth Language. Remember South Africa has 11 official languages. So we get these weirdo racists that think everyone who cannot speak English well, definitely has to be black. These people have tunnel vision, and know only wrong and right, black and white. They are so stupid because they have not heard that racists are the lowest breed in the world.

Why people should think that the epitome of of culture should be the capability to master the English language, is a mystery. We speak it in South Africa. But we also have many other beautiful languages. The different cultures in our country have different ways of speaking and pronouncing the Queens English, but to hell with the 'purists; As long as we understand each other, who the hell are they to judge? Can they speak your language?

Yes i saw that remark and was unnecessary, but no, we have 11 official languages, and a lot pretend not to speak Afrikaans but nearly all at least understands English and knows a few words

Emmy, how many "people from SA" said that to you. How many of the 45 million? One? Please don't generalise.

I'm from UK, living in Canada, and I've heard more varieties of English than I can count. South African accented English is one of my favourites!
