First off, I don't want people to die and to suffer, but I am fascinated by the fires in San Diego. I know when you get down to it, people have been hurt and many more have been evacuated and don't know if their homes are gone. But, when you ignore those things, this fire is fascinating. It's not something I have experienced before (I was in the bay area when the Cedar Fires happened) and I find myself sort of rooting for the fire. Maybe it's an underdog sort of thing; while the fire is massive, it's a foregone conclusion that at some point in the future, it will be put out. I am sure the fact that none of my friends and family (or myself) are threatened allows me to ignore the seriousness of the situation, but what do you think this is about. Why do I keep checking the fire maps to see if the fire has gotten bigger?To you all who think I am a budding arsonist: I have never had any fascination with starting fires just to watch them burn. I get nervous lighting my stove when the pilot has gone out. Trust me, your knee-jerk reaction about me being a budding arsonist is wrong.

It's perfectly normal to be fascinated by terrible or horrific events. This is why popular culture tends to favor negative stories over positive ones. Celebrities in crisis sell more magazines than celebrities who are doing good deeds, etc. 95 years after it happened, some people are still obsessed with the sinking of the Titanic, which is a perfect example. Natural disasters are out of the ordinary, and it's human nature to be fascinated by something different from the every day. Being intrigued by the fired does not make you a bad person. However, if you are actually ROOTING for the fire, that is a little strange. You need to remember that even if you don't know those people, losing a home is one of the most devestating things that can happen to someone. You shouldn't wish something like that on anyone.I doubt you are a bad person, but just try to keep things in perspective: people are losing their homes and their lives.

Why would it make you a bad person? You didn't do anything bad. One reason that the average person is fascinated by disaster and misfortune, is that we are instinctively gathering information that may be useful to us someday in an emergency. This is a true instinct, in that we are often don't even think about why we are so fascinated. If nobody enjoyed studying destructive forces, we wouldn't know much about disease, injuries, storms, volcanoes, earthquakes, or fires. We wouldn't have any physicians, meteorologists, geologists, or firefighters. We would be worse off.

No. Not at all. We have not caused it and we too are helpless. And the sight is extraordinary. It truly is fascinating. I am spellbound myself.
