One reason that the average person is fascinated by disaster and misfortune, is that we are instinctively gathering information that may be useful to us someday in an emergency. This is a true instinct, in that we are often don't even think about why we are so fascinated. If nobody enjoyed studying destructive forces, we wouldn't know much about disease, injuries, storms, volcanoes, earthquakes, or fires. We wouldn't have any physicians, meteorologists, geologists, or firefighters. We would be worse off. |
