You might enjoy a cruise. You will usually be able to make several stops in different parts of the world, so you would be able to get the feel of several different cultures. The best tip I have is to compare prices. Sometimes you can find some really good deals out there. Here is a site that has helped me. http://www.information-pro.com/cruising-sailing/

One of the best ways to cut down costs and get a good feel for the place you are in is to stay at hostels. Lots of them have private rooms so you don't have to share. Try www.hostelbookers.com it includes reviews from people that have stayed there before.Another good way to keep costs down is to pick a place where you will get good value for your exchange dollar - Avoid UK, and countries using the Euro. Go for South America, Africa, Eastern Europe (Croatia and Montenegro are really nice), and South East Asia (Laos and Thailand are good options)

Default Save on food

When I travel, most of the time I pick up food at the grocery store and find a place on the water to dine. Saves on the restaurant bill. I mostly get steamed shrimp. But most my travel is Florida and I always stay at beach towns.

When I use to travel in Australia we do groceries too and stuff it in the vehicle's fridge. and in australia you can settle in a couple of parks through cabin or campgrounds and use the grill / barbeque facilities. I always love doing that. that saves a lot. Just avoid the smoke. and your pretty confident that your eating a safe food. i mean not by somebody else's hand that came from somewhere you don't know yet.

Choose wisely how you will traveling when you arrive. My friend once went to Philippine. He was offered a pick up car which was cost around $40. However, after searching through forums and net, he found out that there's a bus route that only spend $10. Can you imagine that?
