Default My parakeets while on vacation?

Okay so I'm leaving my two parakeets (both in seperate cages since they don't get along) with my grandma... Uhm what's the best way for me to load them in the car? I was thinking about putting them in a seperate box and strapping the cages in while I hold them in their boxes. I'll be gone for 4 days.. So will they adapt to some one else taking care of them for a few days? Will they get upset with out me? And how will they be when I bring them home...Will they be grumpy... or mad at me?? Any advice and/or travel tips would be great. Thanks,JaclynOh my grandma lives about 10-20 minutes away.... it's a fairly short ride.

well how far away does your grandma live? i would advise that you leave your birds at home and have your grandma come like once a day to check on them and feed them.

Just leave them in their cages and put them in the car.I just watched two parakeets for a friend for a MONTH!They were fine with me and took right back to her when she returned. You're only gone for 4 days? They probably won't even notice.

If you have pet carriers that would be best. Otherwise if it's not too long of a drive just leave them in their cages and strap them in...They should be okay for a few days with you gone. They may be a little upset when you come home, but that's to be expected. Sometimes they don't mind at all and sometimes they can be mad at you for a couple of days. They think that they've been rehomed and you've left them. They'll get over it though. When I'm gone for two days and come home my grey follows me everywhere and if I go outside on the deck for a couple of minutes she's at the door stratching at it wanting to be with me. Then after a day or two she's back to normal. She just think's that I've left her but when I come home she doesn't let me out of her sight to make sure that I'm not leaving her again.

They wont be upset with you or anything, don't worry. Especially if they arent tame. Believe me, they wont care too much! They will take maybe a day to settle in to your nannys place and they will be fine.Take them out of their cages and put them in small boxes while you transport them. They sell them. Or little travel cages.Something like this - http://www.collectiblesgift.com/images/tw6008s.jpgIf you leave them in their cage while traveling they can flap around and seriously injure themselves. Sprinkle some seeds or pellets on the ground while traveling and offer them water regularly if its a long journey. DO NOT listen to that idiot who "looked after 2 for a month", they dont know nothing. Its better to be safe than sorry.Good luck!

Most people here have the right idea. A bird carrier or similar sized bird transport box should be OK for the trip, assuming the trip is not too long. If the trip is a long one, you will have to provide water and food. The bird may be upset but should not hold a lasting grudge against you. It will probably just be thrilled to see you again, especially if you bring some of it's favorite treats!!

I'm impressed with the way you are dealing with the situation!! You are taking the proper precautions with these birds and the proper care. Please put them in a carrier to transport them. Please give your grandma the name and number of your vet incase anything should happen to them while you are away. Write down on an index card specific instructions on the feeding arrangements of your birds. Any other little tid bits that you might do with your birds, just in case you might forget to mention them to your grandma. This way they are written down. Things like what time they go to bed, what time they get up, and what you feed them for treats. Once you get back, i hardly doubt they will be upset. 4 days is not a long time to be gone. But enough that they need to be taken care of. Oh please take a jug of "YOUR" water with you, so that they get "YOUR" water and not different water sources. Even though your grandma is 20 minutes away, giardia is a danger to birds. Good Luck and have fun!

Your parakeets will be just fine. Don't worry. I've driven with mine in the car and not a problem. Just keep the cage secure in the car to keep from moving around when turning corners. They won't be upset if someone else takes care of them, 4 days is nothing.

I've found that its easiest to take my bird in a smaller travel cage when we're going to the vet or traveling. When you get to your destination, put them back in their regular cage(s)and they should be fine. When I've been away from home for a while, my mom watches my bird and besides some loneliness, he was perfectly healthy when I returned, if a little sad that I left. However, nothing is more inviting than coming home and finding your bird so happy to see you, that they won't stop "talking" for a long time to you. (I always thought my bird was reprimanding me "Don't leave me again!" and "I love you!")
