Default Is it SAFE to road trip ?

I saw films like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre/ wolf creek where there are sadistic psycho killers in the country who can give you a horrible death?I know those films are not entirely true and is set in old times.. but is it safe road tripping across usa/australia in modern time ?
