Default Children Flying alone (Unaccompanied minors)?

My husband and I have been seperated forever. I live in FL he lives in NY. My kids usually fly alone to NY to visit. Since they were both under 12 they were able to preboard the plane and were escorted off the plane being unaccompanied minors. Here is my question, my son will be 12 on Wednesday which makes him just a minor. As a surprise Christmas gift to my hsband and kids me and my mother in law are flying the kids to NY for Christmas. My daughter is 8 and would be considered an unaccompanied minor. She would still be able to preboard and be escorted off the plane. I obviously want my kids to stay together what will happen to my son? Will he not be able to board with my daughter? I am going to call the airline tomorrow (southwest) but just curious if anyone knew the answer before I do.I have already purchased their tickets (direct flights) Southwest does not charge an additional fee for unaccompanied minors. They have flown several times before to their fathers, but have both been under 12. With Southwest 12 you are no longer an unaccompanied minor, just a minor.

it's always a different policy with different airlines, but all it is really is that you will fill out all sorts of forms and pass your daughter off to the check-in agent who will escort her on to the aircraft who then passes her off to a flight attendant, and then the reverse, and on to your husband who signs off for them.just let them know that the boy is your son and check them in together and they should really have no problem letting him walk along with them or even assign seats for them together (if you didn't do pre-assigned seating)just make sure to check in early, because they're usually more accommodating when they're not in a rush or short on seats. even if you're a bit late, and the seats are full, the FAs won't have a problem asking single adults to switch seats so your kids will be together.but yes, calling to ensure everything works out in advance is your best bet

Yes, don't worry. I assume you will be doing the checking-in procedures for the kids. You will need to mention that they are minors travelling without adult-supervision to the check-in clerk. He/she will place an asterisk over your child's name and the air steward(ess) will take special care of your kids. The airline will also make special arrangements, that is having a customers service officer waiting for your kids at the arrival lounge in NY. A transfer to the desired location will be provided.

Children can fly unaccompanied with the airlines crew. My daughter has flown many times by herself. She is 14. And, actually, she left today to go back to her dad's house in another state. She is still too young to fly alone. If she is flying alone, there is a fee to allow this to happen. It is $50. With this fee, they attach a brightly colored arm band, escort the child to the plane, and escort the child off the plane. They sit the child close to them, close enough for the child to be watched at all times. You must specify who is meeting the child at the gate. Make sure that the name matches the ID. If it doesn't, such as a married name--make sure the ID matches, or they will not allow them to leave with the child until calls are made to verify. They help the child if plane changes are needed, and make sure the child does not leave the area during lay overs. The fee is required until the child is 15. There will be no problems with your children staying together, although, I know that they need to be 15 or older to not require this service.

I think your son would still board with your daughter because I remember this one time when i was about to board a Southwest flight, they announced that all minors and kids (along with passengers that might need assistance) can board first. Besides, I dont think Southwest would separate those 2. They should be able to board together.

They will not separate your children just because your daughter is under the age of 12. Call Southwest, make arrangements for them to be pre-boarded together and get a pass where you can wait with them at the gate. That way you can make sure they get on the plane together and your ex can meet them at the gate on the other side. If you ask for that they will more than likely get you a gate pass to do this and will give you peace of mind.
