Default Southwest AIRline's new boarding?

How does it work? On the boarding pass, what do the letters and the numbers mean?

The letter is group and the # is position. Example...group a will board first 1-30 and then group a 31-60

They've changed it since I used them. It used to be Boarding group A, B, and C. The new way is A1-A40 (for example), Then B1-40 (for example). Then people have to line up in a general order.Family boarding is between A and B. Frequent fliers I think get A every time, but you can check in online 24 hours before your flight and try and get an A. Otherwise you'll get a B.

,Those letters and numbers represent seats. Open the link, If you have 22A, it means you are in row 22, seat "A". Southwest is starting to use the assigned seat system, as it makes for faster boarding. They'll let the people in rows(example) rows 16-23 board first, then those in rown 10-16, than those on 1-10. It cuts down on congestion, and eliminate someone getting on the plane first, grabbing a seat in row 2, then blocking the aisle while he puts his luggage in the overhead rack. You;ll also be able to ask for a certain seat when you make your reservations. Most airlines have used this system for years and years, and now Southwest is coming around to it.

The answer that says that Southwest is going to assigned seating is completely incorrect. As correctly noted by the other persons who answered the question, the letters and numbers refer to the boarding position within each of Southwest's three boarding zones (A, B, and C). A person with an A boarding pass will board before those with B and C passes, but a person with an A-40 boarding pass won't get to board until those persons with A-1 through A-30 boarding passes have the opportunity to board.
