What are some of the changes they have made? It's an attempt to appeal more to business travelers, some of whom dislike the fact the Southwest does not have advance seat assignments. There were two major changes. The first was a change to their boarding procedure. In the past, boarding passes only showed a "zone" which was A, B, or C. Passengers in A boarded first, then B, then C. The result was that people lined up at the gate early so that they could board early and take the best seats. Now, you can check in in advance and get both a zone and reserve your place in line. They still don't reserve specific seats. However, if you are B20, then you are the 20th person to board in zone B. You don't have to get in line an hour early to secure a place in line. They have also introduced a "business select" fare. It's still the same coach seats, but you get priority boarding, extra frequent flyer miles, and a free drink. |
