 Why do Southwest leads Fortune’s list of the most admired airlines in the world?
They are well-run company. The airline tries to turn an airplane around in 15-30 minutes to maximize the usage of the aircraft since a parked aircraft does not generate revenue for the airline. They treat their employees very well. Actually Southwest Airline's policy is to take care of its employees ahead of its customers. That way if you take care of your employees, they will in turn take care of your customers. The airline promotes having fun and you will hear about how the flight attendants may greet passengers from inside an overhead cabin. There have been stories of how the flight attendants will tell you the in-flight safety features by rapping. They say that for every opening at Southwest Airlines, at least 10 people apply for it. What I like about Southwest is that they are pretty good at planning. They hedged fuel at $30 a barrel. I am sure they used up most of that if not all by now but when the price of fuel shot up, Southwest was not bothered by it. |
