Default Airtran Airways or US Airways?

If you were going on vacation, and had to chose between Airtran Airways or US Airways; which one would you chose and why? Have you ever flown on both of these airlines before? If you have, tell me your experience.

Airtran, if you have only these two to choose from. I flew them once, and they were adequate. Courteous, on time, and a good hub (in Chicago as I recall).USAirways featured snotty "PC" cabin-crew and lost my bags to boot. Plus, when I had to change flights with them due to a Miami weather emergency, the person I got on the line (after waiting for more than 1/2 hour) was so incompetent that I eventually gave up. Delta took up the slack and made the changes, but I never did get credit for the miles on USAir. To me, American has been the most consistently reliable US carrier. No great perks or comfort, really, but at least a wide network that includes international destinations (both Europe and Latin America) and plenty of US ones, clean planes, on time, and a good website.

I have flown with both airlines. I flew US Airways before they were merged with America West. The service was good and the flights were on time. I have not flown with them post-merger, but I have heard about the nightmares from other people about flying with US Airways. If I were to book a holiday now, I would take AirTran before US Airways because the AirTran folks are nice and their flights are on time. Plus, I am an airline junkie and I would much rather fly on the 717's of AirTran than the regional jets US Airways is flying from my hometown airport.

I've flown on both airlines several times. AirTran I've just flown about a dozen times or so, between Boston and Baltimore. Never had any problems with them - no lost luggage or delayed flights, and on an hour and a half flight you're not gonna get more than a can of soda anyway. The only major advantage to them is XM radio - otherwise they're just an average airline. USAirways I've flown probably a couple hundred times. Granted I have a few hundred thousand frequent flier miles on them, but they always treat me really well. 2 or 3 years ago, I would have said avoid them, but their service is now a LOT better (they've gone from one of the worst to one of the better domestic airlines). They're friendly, helpful, and I've only once had a significantly delayed flight on them. (In that case there was a 2-foot snowstorm in Boston so not the airline's fault. They put us up in a hotel and went above and beyond the call as far as communicating stuff to us and being very helpful and accomodating. I was impressed.) So if you have a choice go with USAirways. Plus their Charlotte hub is good - AirTran's main hub is Atlanta which is terrible. Also - I usually find better deals on USAirways (that is, when I'm not traveling for work and have to pay for my own flight).
