Default Cough Syrup Question...San Diego Fire Related?

I live in the San Diego area, and suffer from a number of health problems including esophagitis, Fibromyalgia, IBS with diarrhea, and I've also had difficulties with airways in the past that they never identified...similar to asthma, but they determined it was not asthma. Anyways, I've been having difficulty breathing (big time) due to the fires (the smoke is the biggest problem in my area). I've been using an albuterol inhaler, and I've also had to rely on a home nebulizer machine with a mask at this point. The cough and sore throat have been terrible. I have not been outdoors, we have the windows and doors sealed tightly, and what I'm experiencing is just from it being in the air all around us. The cough was so bad last night that I took some cough syrup with codeine I was wondering how safe this is to take for this type of cough? It did stop the cough for the night and enabled me to sleep, but is this the right thing to do. I tried expectorants earlier in the day and they failed

Reactive Airway Disease and fibromyalgia AND IBS! Wow, what a mess you are. Are you getting Social Security yet? Seriously, you'll be fine taking that syrup with codeine. In fact it should help your diarrhea. But may upset your stomach. The biggest concern would be respiratory depression which may affect your lungs.

It is safe for any type of cough, you just need to be careful if you are taking any other meds and it sounds like you probably are. The codeine is a CNS depressant, so if you take anything else that also is it could cause extremely shallow breathing or even cause you to stop breathing. Just check with your Dr. or pharmacist to make sure that you don't have any adverse reactions between meds.P.S. The smoke and ash are getting old, aren't they?

You really didn't have to mention IBS and diarrhea. Go with the cough medicine that worked. If the expectorant did nothing, then don't use it. Put a call in to your doc, preferably a pulmonologist.

I agree with the other answer, but with codeine you also have to be cocerned about allergic reactions. It is one of those drugs that many ppl are allergic to. If you have taken it b4 without problems, you shouldn't have problems now.
