Default Does Airlines across the globe maintain a checklist of passengers that have actually boarded the aircraft?

They don't in India (where I am from). Not even in the International flights offerred by the Airlines Companies that are Indian.Recently my dad flew to Bangkok via Jet Airways (www.jetairways.com), a premier Airlines in India and was stopped at the immigration for visa hiccups and had to wait there for 5 hours during which time he did not have access to a telephone and as a result was absolutely untraceable for us at home and for my uncle who was waiting for him at the Bangkok International Airport. The Airlines could not tell us anything beyond the fact that he has checked in his baggage and had been issued a boarding pass, and the flight had arrived at Bangkok at so and so hours. To my mind this is a gross malpractice on the part of the Airlines to not maintain a checklist of passengers actually boarding the aricraft and thereby having no knowledge of who I am carrying along. The reasons why I think so should be evident to even a donkey. So, was wondering what it's li

Can't speak for other countries, but in the US there is a passenger list, and records indicate whether a passenger has merely checked in, or whether the passenger's boarding pass was "lifted". Lifted means someone gave the boarding pass to an airline employee as they boarded. That still does not guarantee the person is on the plane; he/she could have turned in the boarding pass and suddenly changed his/her mind, or the boarding pass could be lost/stolen and used by someone else. They are unlikely scenarios, but still possible. At any rate, a lifted boarding pass is the best indication someone is on the plane. In the US passenger records are considered confidential and employees will not give out info to just anyone who asks. I work in airline reservations, and if a caller asked me "Was John Smith on the flight from Paris to New York?", I would definitely not give them any information. I WILL give information if they say, "Was John Smith on Flight 003, his confirmation number is 1A2B3C". That person obviously knows enough already, it's safe to give out additional information.

They can't legally give you that information. I was flying home for Christmas and there were massive delays because of snow storms in Chicago. One of the people was on the same itinerary as me and we were to go standby on a flight to Dallas. We arrived in Dallas where there was a message from his mother. The airline could not legally tell her he was on the flight, but they knew he was on it and was there at the gate waiting to give him the message. His mother did not know what was happening with him whether he did get on the standby flight and to call her back.
