who bought who on the US airways merger with america west? did US buy america west, or the other way?

"Dave" is totally WRONG. America West bought US Airways, but they operate under the US Airways brand because it is more widely known, and because customers might think an airline named "America West" only served the southwestern United States.

America West bought USAIR it just kept the name because it represent better an airline operating the entire USA and was better known troughout the world than America West.In fact the new headquarter of USAIR move to Tempe AZ wich was the America West headquarter before.

A merger doesn't necessarily mean a complete 'buy-out' of either airline, but more of a comingling of assets with restructoring agreements on both sides. Many accommodations and consessions had to be made to both employee groups.

AMWest bought the majority interest in US Airways. They kept the US Airways name since it has a longer established history.
