I lived in San Diego for a couple of years while attending USD. During this time, I found myself at the Gaslamp more than once a weekend. It is a very pricey area, no matter where you're looking, but I would recommend anyplace north of Market St. and west of 10th St. It offers a walkable distance to anyplace in the district, as well as easy access to the trolley, freeway and PCH systems. I hope you fall in love with the city as much as I did! Use Google Maps (or better - Google Earth) to search around the downtown area for a better look.

Well, don't move to the Gaslamp if you are a light sleeper as it's a very noisy part of town...sirens from fire/paramedics who make multiple runs each night. Also very noisy within the area close to the train tracks as the trains blow their horns all thru the night. Little Italy is near but not in the Gaslamp. Heed my warning about the train tracks there. Lots of falling condo values there because of people being unable to sleep at night due to the trains. Federal law changed a couple of years ago which mandated more horn blowing and so what use to be tollerable is intollerable now. Otherwise it's a fun area. To find out which buildings have the worse train noise see websites:http://www.quietzonesd.info/ (see "comments shared")http://www.noisefree.org/newsroom/archive/articlesandiego.html
