Default About Amtrak at Penn Station in New York, is it good, how are the services and what is it like?

I might be using it next summer to go to Toronto, Canada. I will be going on the Maple Leaf train, in the morning. I have never used it before. I know the price is nice and cheap, but is it worth taking it? Please share stories, if necessary.YClept, why would I take all those other trains by taking Metro North when I could take one train that would lead me to one place.Petey C, I know how Penn Station is. The subject is Amtrak. I want to know what it is like to take Amtrak, what is Amtrak like?Rex K, I have been to amtrak.com so many times. I just want to know what it is like to ride it.THANK YOU, Tony S and biff_the!!! FINALLY, someone understood what I was asking!!!

My idea was to save you some money. Why bother mentioning PENN STATION if you DIDN'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT? Maybe you should learn how to communicate more effectively if you want more people to understand what you're asking. You're welcome for nothing.

Penn Station is very safe (there are cops all around the station as well as National Guard units - post 9-11). Accessing on the train is simple (they have the "roll signs" for the track information.) I took it as far as Rochester and the ride was a pleasant one though the food at best was "ehhhhhhh" (pack a sandwich or grab some snacks).Regarding Poughkeepsie and Metro-North, you COULD do what the first poster suggested, however the majority of the Metro North trains run local from Croton-Harmon to Poughkeepsie, whereas from Penn Station, the only stations you are dealing with that Metro-North shares are Yonkers, Croton-Harmon and Poughkeepsie. Timewise, Metro-North would take longer and the money saved isn't that substantial.

If you're set on taking the train, you don't have a choice. Amtrak is ok but often runs late, food is terrible and expect about 1-2 hour wait at the border; but it's the only way to get from Toronto to NYC via train.Penn Station in NYC is fine, lots of bums, homeless, etc but also a lot of cops. It's not a place you're going to hang out in but it's convenient to subway, buses, etc.
