Amtrak station in Newark, NJ. (Too dangerous?)?

Hi.I'm 22 and want to take the Amtrak train in Newark to visit family, but everyone (including my family+friends) tell me that Newark is too dangerous and that I should just stay home because I'll never make it to the station with all my possessions. Is this true?I mean, I've actually lived in Fair Lawn my entire life and never have gone to NYC because all of my family/peers tell me that it's too dangerous/expensive to travel to despite being only like 20 minutes away.Granted I don't drive, so I would have to take a taxi.But still, is the Amtrak in Newark too risky?

My then-girlfriend and I have been to the Newark Penn Station in 2003 and did not have problems with personal safety. Some people tend to exaggerate for no reason.
