Default Has anyone taken Amtrak across country?

Im a travel nut and love train travel. But the furthest I have done is NY to Toronto and NY to Montreal. My girlfriend and I wanted to try NY to Seattle or NY to San Francisco. Has anyone taken this on Amtrak before? How was the trip? How were the rooms?meals? scenery etc.If you have links to any good amtrak websites with messageboards, photos from travelers etc Id appreciate it.

I did, from NYC to Chicago, and stayed for 3days, and then continued to San FranciscoYou can laid down in the couch seats , walk to dining car and view car( all grass in the car), meal about $10, the view is spectacular especially from Denver to SF, you will see rocky mountain and skiing, when you get to Utah, you will see those exotic rocks and arches like western films, and passing sierra neveda, you will see those gold rush town.I suggest you take train from SF to LA, along with california coast, and then take train from LA to Chicago, you can stop over at william, and then take grand canyon train( $65) to grand canyon.

My parents did years ago...NYC to Los Angeles. I would love to travel on the cars similar to the Orient Express, that does the Rocky Mts., west.

My kid went from NC to Cali on amtrak...travelled there across the northern US; came back the southern route, through New Orleans...DON'T!!! New Orleans station is awful, the security officers are pigs, there. There is nothing safe about that place. It is a very, very scary hole. My suggestion: stay north if traveling amtrak.
