I looked this up online and i think i have to take the airtrain (is this a free shuttle service?) from the airport to penn station in NJ and connect to either the njtransit or the amtrak to get to Penn station in NY. Is this right? And what's the difference in cost/time etc? Any further details appreciated. Thanks.

You have a few options but in my opinion, the most efficient and economical way would be to take the PATH train. To take the PATH you would need to get to the airport's train station. From there you can take a train, either AMTRAK or NJ Transit to Newark Penn Station. At that station you can pick up a PATH train to New York Penn Station.Another option would be to take AMTRAK or NJ Transit directly to New York's Penn Station, but this option will be more costly than my first suggestion.Of course you could always take the Super Shuttle or the Airport Express busses which will take you anywhere in midtown.Here is a handy link to the Port Authority website which can give you more info, including fares and schedules.Happy travels

The part inside the airport is free. It costs $5.50 to take it to Newark Penn Station and then you take the regular NJ Transit to NY Penn Station. NJ Transit is cheaper than Amtrak. Don't take the path to get to NY Penn Station. If you buy your ticket on the train you will pay more than buying it at the station.

It cost about $45 to $50.Airtrain fee is included on New Jersey Transit Ticket Fare travel to New York Penn Station on Northeast Corridor & North Jersey Coast Line.If you decide to take New Jersey Transit rail, don't purchase on board because if ticket vending machine is operating or window is open,, you must paid $5 surchage.Best cheapest option is to go this way.At Terminals A (Bus Courtyard, and C.Make sure to get on New Jersey Transit #62 Bus toward "Newark" because "Perth Amboy" also circle arounds.Since Newark Liberty International Airport and Newark Penn Station is within Fare Zone, you only paid $1.35 on it. You can take the air train to the NJ tranist station stop in newark airport then catch the train to penn

Newark Airport to Penn Station, NYCStep 1: take the Airtrain Newark from the terminal to the Newark Airport train station. The Airtrain is free with in the terminal, however when you change trains at the Newark Airport train station, you'll have to pay a fee of $5.50 to exit the Airtrain system. Make sure you buy a ticket to cover both the Airtrain fee and the ride to New York City.Step 2: at the Newark Airport train station, take the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor Line from Newark Airport train station to New York Penn Station.
