The nearest Amtrak is Jack London Square. It's 10 blocks from either BART 12th Street or BART Lake Merritt (both $3.50 fare from Balboa Park). Amtrak Richmond is right next to BART Richmond ($4.30) Only the Capitols and San Joaquins stop there.Amtrak Coliseum is 1 block from BART Coliseum ($3.90) but only the Capitols stop there. If you want the Coast Starlight, you'll need Jack London or Emeryville. If you want the California Zephyr, only Emeryville will do. Amtrak Emeryville is miles from BART MacArthur, so you'd be better off taking the Amtrak bus from the City. Take BART to Embarcadero and walk up to the Ferry Building. Check Amtrak's website for which stations are manned. Jack London and Emeryville are manned, Coliseum is not. If you get on at a station which is not manned, you can buy your ticket on the train at no penalty. Also, most if not all Amtrak stations have a vending machine where you can buy a ticket with Visa/MC/ATM but I believe not cash.
