I'm going to be in new york in a couple of weeks, but only for 3 hours because of a layover on amtrak. Is there anything fun to do in that short of time in the area? I'm going to be with a 13 year old so keep that in mind!

Take a walk up to Times Square, Stop on 8th ave and 37 st at Gray's Papaya and get 2 very good hot dogs and a papya drink for $3.50 Then walk back to penn sta.

Yes, you could do something during 3 hours.If you walk to Hudson River, you guys could watch view of New Jersey Palisade from Hudson River Waterfront.You could also go walk to Times Square Toy R'Us which is biggest toystore and have many toys and you could shop for toys, etc and also at 9th Av/41st St, there's pizza slice at 99 cent Pizza Slice which cost less than $1!.After you order, walk back to Penn Station Waiting Area and wait for your Amtrak.

Go to Macy's! It's the big one - Macy's Herald Square, their flagship store and they say it's the largest store in the world. It's a fun place, and so close to Penn Station. This way, you won't miss your train.

Empire State Building is at 5th Ave. and 34th Street (Penn Sta. is at 34th and 7th Ave.)...you can buy an "express" ticket to the observation deck online to ensure you won't spend your whole 3 hours waiting in line.

cheesecake and cannoli by a polish owned shop called D'Auito's on 8th ave btwn 30th and 31st st. when will be the next time you will have real new york cheesecake?then you can shop along 34th st, macy's, h&m, etc. etc.
