Just take a cab, in fact you could actually walk to UPENN, thats how close 30th street sation is to Penn but just hop in a cab shouldnt be more than 5-6 dollar ride.

SEPTA has a train that runs from 30th Street to Penn. When you get off Amtrak, go to the 'Regional Rail' section of 30th Street and look for the info on the boards. It's a quick ride, not more than a couple bucks.

There are 2 ways to get to Philadelphia from NYC by train: the expensive way, and the cheap way. You can get an Amtrack ticket, and be there in about 1.5 hours, or for about 1/3 the cost, you can take the NJ commuter train, that takes about 2 1/2 hours - from the same station (Pennsylvania Station) to Trenton, then get on Pennsylvania's SEPTA train to 30th street station. From there you can walk, or take the subway for one stop. You have to purchase your tickets before boarding. In NYC you have to ask where to get the tickets and trains. I do not remember the details, but you want the New Jersey commuter trains. When you get to Trenton, there are ticket machines on the platform, and you should have enough time to purchase your ticket to 30th Street if you come prepared with change. You will need 5 or 6 dollars, well maybe 6 or 7? If you get on the SEPTA train without a ticket they can charge you a surcharge of an extra few dollars, so if the train is about to leave, ask if it is OK without a ticket. If you will be returning within a month, you should definitely get a return ticket from the NJ Transport system. It is much cheaper than 2 one way tickets. I am not aware of any 'useful' two way fares on SEPTA.Bon voyage

Save your money; the easiest thing to do is just walk. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from 30th St to Penn. Check out Google Maps or this map of the Penn campus; the station is at 30th & Market, not that far at all.http://www.facilities.upenn.edu/mapsBldgs/view_map.php3?id=1If you have a lot of baggage with you, or you don't want to walk, there are a few SEPTA stops on or near the Penn campus. At 30th St Station, switch to the trolley ("subway surface line"), and take it to either 36th or 37th Street stops. There's also a Regional Rail stop at the edge of campus; take the R1, R2, or R3 train.http://www.septa.org/maps/subway_surface.htmlhttp://www.septa.org/maps/click_map/university_city.html
