Default Whats a CHEAP way to travel state-to-state?

I'm trying to travel from Portland, OR to NW Kansas, and all the airlines are over $400 at the very least, and Amtrak is even MORE expensive for the same trip, which makes no sense at all, how are they still in business?Is there any way to travel where I'm not going to get ripped off?

try rideshare on www.craigslist.org and split the gas with someone....

Greyhound will take you anywhere in the US for $99 or less with 14-day advance booking.
