Very much like a regular train.Well, definitely go business class over coach (if just to avoid the musty smell in coach). I'd even consider a sleeper so you can nap a bit and it has a private bathroom. I went from Texas to California (3 days) and by the end I was stir crazy, but 9 hours, not so bad. Noisy ride but not scary or uncomfortable. Take some reading material and of course the ipod. They show movies in a shared lounge and serve snacks and dinner for a little extra. Have fun, I'd do it again but no more than 4 hours per trip.

YES-have often made the NORMALLY SCHEDULED 6 HOUR round trips between Chicago IL& St.Louis MO (OFTEN TIMES LATE TIMES FOR ST. LOUIS DEPARTURE TIMES)---NEVER HAVE HAD A MOVIE TO VIEW---LIKE THE ABILITY TO STRETCH MY LEGS,AND VISIT THE CLUB CAR FOR SNACKS---DOWNSIDE, THE 6 HOURS FOR THE AMTRAK TRIP,versus 40-55 MINUTE AIR TRAVEL TIME VIA AMERICAN AIRLINES---HAVE PAID AS LITTLE AS $20. USD FOR A ONE WAY( EACH WAY) FARE ON AMTRAK IF BOOKED SUFICIENTLY WELL ENOUGH IN ADVANCE VIA THE INTERNET.---BUT,HAVE BOOKED IN ADVANCE, VIA INTERNET, @ $49.USD + TAX ( ABOUT $62.USD TOTAL FOR EACH WAY)---IF THE LEGNTH OF TRAVELTIME IS MORE IMPORTANT, USE THE AIRLINES---IF ECONOMIC COST OVERRIDE YOUR TRAVEL TIME CONCERN, USE THE AMTRAK---ONE ADVANTAGE IS THAT THE TRAIN RIDE USUALLY TERMINATES INSIDE THE CITY,VERSUS A NEEED ARRANGEMENT FROM A "FURTHER" OUT AIRPORT FOR WHICH YOU'LL ENCOUNTER ADDITIONAL TRAVEL( AND ASSOCIATED TRAVEL COSTS)------AND,ONLYFOR A 9 HOUR TRIP,WHY WASTE THE EXTRA MONEY ON THE NEEDLESS COST A SLEEPER (EVEN IF SUCH IS EVEN OFFERED)

Not sure what you mean by "regular train". If you mean like a commuter train or subway, then no. Amtrak has much better seats, quiter, often has a lounge/snack car. If you make the train 'part of your trip' rather than just the mode of transportation then you will probably enjoy the scenery and possibly meeting people along the way. Also, give you some quiet time to yourself. Many trains go where there are no nearby highways - throught mountains etc. If you use Amtrak, hope you enjoy your trip.

several time and it is okay but they really cannot hold a schedule. So, 9 hours will be 10 or more. Bring a book, ipod, laptop so you are occupied.

I used to take the Capital Corridor train in California twice a week... we'd run up to Sacramento from San Jose for meetings in the State Capitol. The Corridor is more of a "commuter" train, and is actually operated under "Amtrak CALFORNIA" and entirely funded by the State ... so it seems to keep to schedule MUCH better than many other Amtrak trains in the middle of the country.Seats were fine, we had power for our laptops, and would work the whole 5 hour ride, both up and back. The BOSS liked the train because we could ALL work, we didn't have to be distracted by the traffic, AND he hates the highways !!
