Default Why does it take so long for the train to get from one place to another?

For example, it takes Amtrak 16 hrs to get from Atl to Philly.

First, the train makes stops along the way and that consumes time. Second, the rickety old tracks that it rides on limits the train's speed. I am going to guess the distance from philly to atl to be 800 miles and if the trip takes 16 hours the train is averaging 50 miles an hour and that isn't too bad. I doubt that you could do much better if you drove yourself and certainly the bus isn't going to do much better. Just find the lounge car and sit back and enjoy the trip. ALL ABOARD.

Well, trains make stops and they have to let people get on and off. Also, there is probably a limit on how fast the train can travel. If the train travels too fast, it might derail and lean or get off track. I've heard that freight trains have priority on most of the train tracks in the United States, so if a freight train is behind an Amtrak train, the Amtrak train has to let the freight train pass. I dont know if thats true, but thats what my friend said.

It takes about 13 hours to drive from Atlanta to Philly. You also didn't stop 19 times (the number of stops between Atlanta and Philly on Amtrak's Crescent line) to pick up and let off people when you drive. It costs a little over $100 each way on the train. You can fly which is less than 2 hours for only a few bucks more and sometimes it's even cheaper to fly.
