Going to New York City for 5 days next year, 22 October 2008.Airline ticket booked, £275 return from Glasgow UK, that's fine that's as cheap as we could find it.We were looking at the hotel's but we would be happy just staying in a hostel, and there are hostels for £46 ($92) a night, close to Central Park. (We have $2000 each in total, that's $1500 after the airline flight). But how safe are they going to be? I don't want any junkies or gangsters nearby, sorry to be blunt.As for eating, how much is it for a meal, it doesn't need to be expensive. Steak and fries, what would be a good price for that? How much is a hot dog from the stands in the street?Does anyone have any other tips for us, ie. safety advice or things that we definately should do?Thank you very much for your help.

We stayed at the Hilton Times Square in NYC and loved it! It's litterally in the center of Times Square so your close to everything. Also, keep your friends and family close but your pocketbook closer!! Ya never know what could happen these days. For dining.. the prices definitely vary. My favorite restaurant is probably either Planet Hollywood or Hard Rock Cafe. They have a variety of things like burgers, steak, onion rings, french fries, etc. Hope I helped!!

OK silly New York City is not scary anymore trust me!Ive been.The most you Will have worry about for safety is when your crossing streets you have to be fast and aware of you surroundings.As for a hotel you should check out the Warwick hotel they have good prices and its a great little hotel.Hot dogs from the stands are a great choice for when you are on the go.And hello its not like your gonna be on a stranded island!They have McDonald's there!!!On your last night you can treat yourself to a nice meal in the big apple.I hope you have fun in the city that never sleeps!

Hi..Accomodation wise, I'd make your first port of call http://www.priceline.co.uk and choose the name your own price section. I've been to NYC 5 times over the last few years and have always used this.Last time I went we got the NY Hilton for 30 quid each a night which isn't bad for NY!Food wise, I'd try "Curry in a hurry" which is just off Lexington Avenue, can't remember the exact address but I'm sure you'll find it on Google.Safety wise, in Manhattan certainly you'll generally be fine. The subway is fine at night as well as during the day (despite what you might have heard) I would avoid the Staten Island Ferry terminal at night though, that's where the homeless and junkies seem to hang out.I've probably got loads of information, drop me a personal message if you like and I'll try and answer anything I can.

When craving cheap chinese, hit up on Chinatown or Flushing. um...a hotdog is usually 2 dollars in manhatten and remember before you leave, go take a taxi, the subway, go eat a pretzel and hotdog and go people watch if you have time. Have Fun.

You could try a boutique hotel such as HotelQT just off of TimesSqaure - it has got a really good bar that has has got a swimming pool and sauna in it - quite strange standing at the bar ordering your drinks next to someone in a bikini !!!As for safety - I feel much safer when visiting NY than walking around say Leicester Square in London, just be sensible and dont go flashing your money/wallet/cameras around etc
