How can I stay at New York for cheap over New Year's?

My boyfriend and I wanna go up and do the whole watching the ball drop thing. We can get there for about $35 roundway for each person through the Chinatown buses, but STAYING there concerns me. Will all the hotels prices shoot up like mad? Anyone got some good advice?

Yes, because Times Square is such a popular thing with the tourists, and many book their rooms a year in advance, any rooms left are going for top dollar. For funsies, I checked Travelocity and the shown rates range from $325 to to $700 a night. My advice: if you can head home the same night, it'd be worth it not to spend out the wazoo for a room.
