Default I am gonna go to New York early Apr. 2008. Can you recommend a SAFE and cheap place to stay at?

This is my first time in the US (New York). I am gonna attend a conference, but the conference hotel is too expensive for me. I have heard a lot about the crime rate there and don't wanna be mugged or even get killed! Is there any New York residents out there who can help? Thanks.

The crime rate in Manhattan NYC is the lowest of any big city in the US. It's really very safe here, so what you are hearing is from people who have no idea what they are talking about. A "Cheap" hotel room that is decent will cost at least $200. You should look for deals on any of the travel websites or consider staying in New Jersey

my friend, throw out those old movies (from the 70s and 80s) that describes new york as a bad place to visit. those day are long gone. this city is the safest big city in America. you will not, I repeat, NOT get mugged or killed in this town.with that said, now for a cheap and safe place to stay. may i recommend the following sites at the bottom of this post.again, this city is the safest big city in America, and the advice you were hearing from people are of those who never set foot in NYC, or have not been here in ages.enjoy you tripNative New Yorker

Rest easy -- New York is very, very safe; and in fact has the lowest crime rate of any major city in the country. So don't fret about your hotel's location. That said, you want cheap, and you might as well stay in Manhattan. My pick is the Hotel Carter, with is right in the heart of Times Square. It's nothing fancy, but it's clean, functional, and close to everything you could want as a tourist. Best of all, it's just $99 per night! Enjoy your trip!Kango Traveler

U went to New York for 4 days in July and stayed in the holiday inn on 57th street. And it was fine clean safe and cheap and cheerful. I'd stay there again.
