there are no cheap hotels near central park. its the heart of manhattan. you may want to commute from queens(near JFK) and take the airtrain to the LIRR and you will be in central park inless than 20 minutes! yay!

Unless you consider 300-500 a night cheap, you wont find one.

just check out hotels.com, less expensive ones can be found depending on when you are going to NYC, book in advance and $200 a night is cheap. Also, pretend like you are going to visit NYU, and stay at a membership type hotel where the college can get you a room under their membership for very cheap.

Fear not, Martha, for there are two cheap hotels I'm personally familiar with. What's more, they're nice enough that I'd even put my long-suffering mother in them!First up, the Hotel Carter, which is right in the heart of Times Square, and only a ten-minute walk to Central Park. It's nothing fancy, but the rooms are clean, safe and functional. And no, this isn't one of those "shared bathroom" affairs. Remember, I said I'd put my own mother there! What's more, their price can't be beat: The rooms are famously $99.Next, the Woogo Hotel at 73rd and Broadway. This one costs a bit more, but also has more creature comforts. More like an apartment than a hotel, the rooms have small kitchens complete with appliances and dishware. It's less than a five minute to the west side of Central Park, in one of Manhattan's best residential neighborhoods.I've personally stayed at both properties, and I've recommended them both to family and friends. You'll have a comfy stay at either one, AND you'll be close to Central Park . . . which is what you wanted in the first place, right?Enjoy your trip!Kango Traveler
