Seriously I think you are asking the impossible. The New York Times has done articles on hotel rooms, lilke what you can get for $99 a night (fleabags only, truly), or what you can get for $200 a night (not much). If you want to stay in a nice hotel for less I'd check out a New Jersey hotel that is near frequent bus service to New York on New Jersey transit, maybe even an airport hotel. Don't even expect fab for less than $350/night in Manhattan though. Then there is about a 15% tax on top of that.

The Chelsea Hotel on West 23rd Street. That's where Jimi Hendrix stayed. Where Sid Vicious overdosed on heroin. Where the poet Dylan Thomas almost jumped out of the window. Other stories at the Chelsea Hotel.

The Pod Hotel on East 51st Street and Third Avenue (the inexpensive have shared bathrooms)http://www.thepodhotel.com/The Chelsea Inn on West 17th and Fifth Avenue - very clean hotel in a townhouse in Chelsea (a great residential area with very interesting restaurants and shops). There's no elevator and the cheaper rooms have shared bathroomshttp://chelseainn.com/The Chelsea Lodge on West 20th Streethttp://www.chelsealodge.com/Also check the Gershwin Hotel - great neighborhood - good priceshttp://www.gershwinhotel.com/english/site1.html
