Nice and cheap are mutually exclusive in New York. That is why I moved out years ago.

Default New York Question?

There's a place in Times Square called the Hotel Edison that is cheap by New York standards (140$ a night or so) and pretty nice. If you go for cheap-cheap you'll have to stick with a YMCA or a hostel downtown.

For hotel, try the Affinia Manhattan Hotel, Midtown South, New York City ... a good value in NYC, though not cheap by standards elsewhere in the country

Nice and cheap? Are you crazy? You're not going to get anything clean in NY for less than $100/night and that's if you search hard and pay attention every day for deals. And that's still not really nice, decent, but definitely not really nice. For really nice expect to pay upwards of $250 a night. And by the time you have paid taxes and tipped everyone that day you should expect to be about $300/day.
