Default Visiting New York?

I'm looking at visiting New York with a friend from December 27 to possibly December 28 if we can get a cheap hotel...very cheap. We're on a VERY tight budget, but we want to get a good feel of the city. Neither of us has ever been there. Any ideas on fun activities that we could do while not blowing a ton of money? I also was looking on how to get around the city...any good bus lines or subways that are cheap? Thanks! If you have any websites with prices that would help too. (By the way we are both under 21, so bar hopping and such is out of the question!)

I grew up in NY and nothing is cheap there......your best bet on travel if your in Mahattan is subway for least expensive but you need to know where you are going what train to take and where to get off.....and be careful..

Ok, Manhattan is not a cheap place in any way shape or form. You might be better off to save some money and go when you can really afford to. Its a fun place with lots to do, but everything costs money. BTW, being under 21 is probably not an issue unless you look 12.Empire State BuildingSkating Rockefeller CenterSee the Tree, Rockefeller CenterCheck out the windows on Fifth AvenueWalk through Central Park...during the dayAppetizers at Tavern on the Green in Central ParkVisit FAO Schwartz because it is awesomeMetropolitan Museum of ArtLunch at The Caliente Cab Company, 7th Ave in the VillageWalkr around The Village and just people watchRide the busses or the subways, but be careful, especially around the holidays.

Default Visiting New York?

I just went to new york for the first time in July and had a blast. I stayed at the Salisbury hotel on 57th street across from Carnage hall. http://www.nycsalisbury.com/ although it was not really nice it was definitely accommodating and not any more worse than any other hotel on a tight budget. I went to expedia and the others and actually got a cheaper rate calling the hotel direct. I believe it was $180 a night but be prepared to pay more in the winter months. Central Park is a few blocks north of there and the museum is across the street from the park as well. Everything is mostly in walking distance. Times square rocks. Hard Rock Cafe, Empiore State building. There are people trying to sell you tours on these big buses. It is not worth it. They drive to fast and you can't see it the same as if you are walking. Take the subway (red #1 i believe) to the statue of liberty, ellis island and ground zero. Those are too far to walk to. Times square is about 10 block or so from 57th street which is really easy and fun to walk to. We rode the subways and felt totally safe. It is not like it is prtrayed in the movies. i totally loved new york and am looking at going back for new years eve. Walk and subway is best forms of transportation. I had a rental car but kept it parked the whole time. Have a blast. Good luck. I wish I was going too!
