Default What is a safe hostel in New York City?

I'm looking to go to New York from November 3-6 and I need a cheap place to stay. I'm going to be looking at colleges with my son, but I would like to avoid a hotel room for $200 per night, if possible. What are your suggestions? Any good places to stay in New Jersey? How's the travel from NJ to NY? Thanks a lot!

Hoboken & Weehawken, NJ are good locations to stay. Hoboken has the NJ Path train that takes you into NYC. Weehawken has buses that run through the Lincoln Tunnel. I actually just booked 2 nights at the Royal Park Hotel & Hostel though www.hostelbookers.com for $240 for next weekend, while most hotels are running $400/night. Also check www.craigslist.org, people usually are renting their apts or rooms in their apts out for the weekend for really cheap.

The link below to a hostel in Chelsea -- one of the safest neighborhoods in Manhattan. I've had a few friends stay there, and I live near there. No hostel is going to be guaranteed safe, you must know that, but this one is as good as they get and it's a great location.I just read more of your question, you may not want a hostel. Another great place is the Incentra Guest House, link below. It is gay friendly, but is over 1/2 straight, and many mother's have stayed there. It's nice too.If you get a place in New Jersey, New Jersey transit and the transit system in NYC are fantastic. There is likely a bus or train that will get you into the city quickly wherever you stay -- but call the hotel first.
