Not sure about the bus, but my brother goes to UCSD and we live in the San Fernando Valley in LA and he took the amtrak train up. It was pretty cheap too. He even booked his ticket online. http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePageAs far as the hotel, which part of LA were you looking into? The city of LA is huge. The county, even larger.

The bus is called "Greyhound" , but I'm sure you already knew that. You can get fares and schedules on their website. As to the hotel/motel, that will vary depending on what part of L. A. proper you are going to.

Stay AWAY FROM GREYHOUND they will leave your stranded!greyhound has a habit of either making people stand on a full bus or leaving them behind for the next bus which would already be fullI would take Amtrak instead..you get better views and you can move around the trainfor cheaper hotels try motel 6

I would recommend Amtrax! It goes from San Diego to LA.For Hotel, just select a road side hotel in West Los Angeles, like a Best Western or Holiday Inn.Enjoy your trip!

I do not know about the bus, but if your looking for a cheap place to stay you should check out some hostels. The LA area is famous for them. A Basic yahoo search for Hostels will bring you too some good brokers. You could probably find a bed for around $20 a night. If your looking for something more private I think the ones in Venice charge around $60 for a single.

I went to LA 2x, first is by Greyhound and the 2nd is by Amtrak. I feel more comfortable with the Amtrak though it is more expensive. There are schedules on line. Search the internet for the cheapest hotel in LA. It depends on what area are you planning to stay.

The Amtrak is a great way to get from SD to LA, and you can look at the scenery, too.
