Family Road Trip from Alberta to Arizona, Nevada, California?

We are planning a family road trip from Calgary thru the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Anaheim, San Francisco, Spokane and Coeur D'Alene. Looking for advice for clean inexpensive motel/hotels along the way, cheap places to fill up with gas and for good meals. Any advice would be great, as well as not too miss attractions, we are travelling with 2 boys, aged 10 and 12.

Motel 6. Book the room in the place you are staying the night at breakfast and they will hold it until 6 without at card. Call back before 6 and lock it with a credit card if you haven't found something better than that.Rooms at the Grand Canyon are hard to get at reasonable rates so if you know the date, lock it in earlier. You can also stay in Flagstaff and drive up there if you can't find anything. Staying in the park is better though. Because the dollar is so cheap, expect lots of Europeans paying any price.
