there are several cheap hotel very close to the bus station.

It is a lot cheaper and usually nicer in Laval, QC (biggest city North of the Montreal island). That is especially better if you have a car because it's 15 minutes from downtown. the alternative is a hostel in the tourist area in Mtl.
