Default Cheap things to do in Montreal?

We are going to Montreal for a weekend, and need some info on cheap or free things to do and see in the city. Museums, etc. We are going to have a picnic, so anyone know a good spot for that? Or if anyone can recommend cheap hotels, etc.We have a pregnant lady with us, so no heavy walking in the heat!

There are many things to see and discover in montreal. You may have to be selective of your activities if you are only staying one week-end. Here are a couple of suggestions that may help:1. Visit St-Joseph's Oratory - nice views, interesting history; it does have a museum that you can visit (they take donations). 2. Walk Ste-Catherine street - in the heart of downtown; it's fun to be amidst all the people - there's lots of air conditioned shops/malls (with connecting underground tunnels)3. Picnic on the Mount-Royal is nice - there are a few lookout spots. 4. If you're going during the summer, chances are there will be some kind of festival going. Ask around - there might some music concerts outdoors. 5. Visit Old Montreal. Overall, Montreal is not expensive. Enjoy the good food and liveliness of the city. It's a great place to be.

You sound really broke. Why don't you just stay home instead? If you want to enjoy a nice picnic outdoors, why not go to Mount Royal?Good luck to you!

For a picnic head to the foot of Mount Royal on Sunday for the Tam-Tams!!!! This is your best dose of culture! AND IT'S FREE!!!!(Avenue du Parc; the nearest crosstreet is Ave. Mont Royal, it's a large monument and a huge crowd, you can't miss it). It's a weekly party; there's several groups of drummers (they mostly play djembes- aka African drums) and people dancing. There's local artists who sell clothes, jewelery, sculptures, art etc etc. A little ways up the mountain there's swordfighting/war games (people make their own swords with PVC pipes & foam)... there's usually a ninja, a samurai, a few guys in kilts, a few guys in chainmail... it's really something to see. Sometimes there's acrobats and other performers (I remember seeing one guy tightrope walking betwen two trees).
